Cracking the Sleep Code: Consistency, Not Luck, for Baby's First Year Sleep

Hey everyone! Let's talk about baby sleep – it's often the most elusive and talked-about topic for new parents. Forget the idea that some babies are "lucky sleepers"; in my book, "Baby’s First Year of Life", I share how consistency and routine are the real game-changers, not luck.

Babies actually need sleep for everything from physical growth to cognitive development, and even preventing future issues like obesity. They aren't born knowing day from night, so teaching them the difference in the first three months is crucial. This means naps can happen in bright, noisy environments, but bedtime? That’s for darkness and quiet. And yes, I even advised lifting a sleeping baby if a nap went on too long, so they learn to save their longer stretches for night.

I began introducing a bedtime routine with both my girls, Anna and Molly, from six weeks old. It wasn't about rigid schedules from day one, but about creating a calming atmosphere and a predictable sequence of events. Think quiet house from 5/5:30 pm, dim night light, soft instrumental lullabies, and then getting baby ready in their sleep bag. The key is to put your baby down awake so they learn to settle themselves. If they stir, gentle reassurance like a hand on their stomach or a quick doedee, followed by leaving the room, can work wonders – I tried not to lift them back out.

This consistent approach extended to morning routines too: a 7 am wake-up (even with earlier feeds, done as quiet night feeds) and structured morning and afternoon naps. I truly believe that eating and sleeping go hand in hand; once feeding was organised, sleep patterns naturally followed.

My method isn't complicated, but it is consistent. Anna slept through the night from week 9, and Molly by week 11. We didn't "sleep train" them in the traditional sense; we simply introduced a routine early and stuck with it. Even during sleep regressions, maintaining the routine helps babies navigate these temporary disruptions.
